Nothing exists without the female. She Yin's our Yang perfectly. Though rap music from the start has been dominated by a male presence and, at its worst, can be extremely misogynistic, it is nothing without its women. As muses, subjects, lyricists, or a producers, ladies cannot be discounted historically in Hip Hop. Don't let this week's playlist fool you, it features the best in female rapping from the old school. Remember, here at freshrewind.com, we only play hip hop that is 15 years old or older. Nate Dogg, known as the King of Hooks, passed away on March 15th, 2011. He blessed many a chorus with his catchy, gritty and melodic hooks that made rap song memorable and enhanced their sales. We honor his career with this medley. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. We apologize in advance for breaking our rule about playing music 15 years or older for this mix. We felt that to show the breadth and range of Nate Dogg's portfolio that it was necessary. We promise this won't happen often. We know you'll forgive us

“I’ve got to kick something that means something…”
“You know I’m proud to be black, y’all…”
“The Red, Black and Green means so much more than red, black and green…”
“It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under…”
While Hip Hop has always reflected and reported social conditions, at some point she became self-aware and introspective. She brashly beat her chest and screamed to the world a Descartes-ian proclamation of her existence. She also let you know that she saw your tricks and was not having it. In honor of Black history month, we present an offering of conscious Hip Hop in many forms. Some of it is social commentary, some is internal realization, some is preachy but all of it is awe-inspiring. Let us know what you think in the comment section below…

It's still Black History month and we're still celebrating here at www.freshrewind.com. This week, Life expresses the dichotomy, hues, contrasts and contradictions of being Black in the U.S. through this musical concoction. Ice Cube's outrage, Black Sheep's logistic expression and Mahalia Jackson's optimism bring validity to the (emotional) roller coaster of race relations we experience daily. Check out our melodies and don't forget to rate this week's mix!

Dear Listener,
I'm a sucker for Heribie Hancock sample and a good jazz riff. This week's mix is one that I've wanted to do for some time. It's my own eccentric, eclectic, esoteric mix of hip hop with really great jazz samples. I also included the sample sources with links to help you hear, and possibly, discover some good music outside of our hip hop sphere. This one was a true labor of love and I sincerely hope you enjoy listening as much as I did concocting!
Love,
Mr. Frostbite

We usually classify West Coast rap as "Gangsta Rap" fueled by violent and sometimes gory lyrics. This stereotype is well earned but West coast rappers also laid the foundation for Miami Bass music (Rodney O and Joe Cooley), brought some conscious lyrical heat (Def Jeff), and gave us some of the funniest and silliest raps to date (The Pharcyde). We bring you these aforementioned artists in this week's mix. Please comment!

No race can lay claim to the whole of hip hop. While it purportedly tends to be a "Black thing," Much of the foundation comes from a variety of cultures, races and backgrounds. This week's mix is an homage to our lighter brothers of another color. Where would we be without Rick Rubin's production of Run DMC and the Beastie Boys? Where would pop music of the 90's be without samples from the eltro-heavy production of Phil Mantronik (of Mantronix, featured in this mix!)? Would rap have its crossover appeal and lucrative potential without the success of Vanilla Ice? Check out some of our mixes from previous weeks. Our mixes are downloadable and can be played on your smart phone! Remember, we only play hip hop from 15 years ago and before!

Et Toi, World! This week's podcast is all about Bounce music from New Orleans. A mesh of call and response dance music, New Orleans Indian chants and "hypersexual" lyrics, Bounce has been influencing the Southern US rap scene since 1991. Bounce has been so influential, in fact, that an exhibit is dedicated to it in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, Louisiana. Remember, at FreshRewind.com, if it isn't 15 years old or older, we don't play it! Be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you like to see in a forthcoming podcast.

This week's mix stinks- no, actually it STANKS! Here we present you, Dear Listener, with some of the best funky, bass line heavy songs from the Old School Hip Hop era. George Clinton, James Brown and Roger Troutman weren't rappers but had more influence on rap than most lyricists, producers or DJs. At FreshRewind.com, we deliver weekly Hip Hop mixes with songs from 15 years ago and before. You can find us on Facebook (like us!), Twitter (follow us!) and Stitcher (listen to us!).
